Early history

The town of Bulan has a colorful and dramatic history which dates back to the pre-Hispanic period. Legend surrounds the name Bulan and the early encounters along the coast.

The name Bulan

"Bulan" in the local Bulanon dialect can mean month, moon, or luminary. Local tradition tells of Spanish scouts and excited natives pointing to the moon, calling it "Builan... Builan," which later became the town's name.

Coastal stories

Historical accounts describe a Spanish scouting expedition from Ticao that sailed northward past the Otabi seacoast and witnessed the moon's glow. That luminous night left a lasting mark on the community and its identity.
